What we believe at Church in the City-BA about Jesus, the Bible, and the Church

Our Beliefs

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings, His atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people and personal, visible return to earth (John 1:1-14, 20:28; Isaiah 9:6; 1 Timothy 3:16, 2:5; Philippians 2:5-6; Matthew 1:18-20, 23; Romans 5:12-21; Luke 1:27).

God the Father

We believe in God the Father, an infinite personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of His people and of the world; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. Because of this, we give prominence not only the practical and scholarly teaching of the Word, but also to intimate and expressive worship, and Spirit-inspired and personally focused ministry.

We believe that there is One Living and True God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; we believe that this triune God created all, upholds all and governs all (Genesis 1:26; Matthew 3:16-17; 1 John 5:7; Isaiah 9:6; Luke 1:35; Hebrews 3:7-11).

The bible

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired, without error in the original manuscripts (2 Peter 1:20-21; Proverbs 30:5; 2 Timothy 3:16; Romans 16:25-26).

The holy spirit

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify and empower for ministry all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding helper, teacher and guide. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all biblical gifts of the Spirit.

Repentance and salvation

We believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice and are therefore under condemnation; that God renews, by the Holy Spirit, those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord; that Jesus Christ baptizes the believer with the Holy Spirit and empowers them for service (Acts 2:38, 3:19; Ephesians 2:8-9) Galatians 2:16; Titus 3:5; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9-10; Hebrews 9:22).

baptism and the lord's supper

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ committed two ordinances to the church; Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We believe in baptism by immersion (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38) and communion open to all believers in remembrance of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross (1 Corinthians 10:16, 11:23-25; Mark 16:16; Acts 8:12, 36-38, 10:47; Matthew 26:26-29).

We believe in the universal church, the living spiritual body of which Christ is the Head and all renewed persons are members (Ephesians 1:22, 2:19-22; Hebrews 12:23).

Second coming

We believe that Jesus Christ will physically and visibly return to earth for the second time to establish His Kingdom. This will occur attime undisclosed by the Scriptures (Revelation 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:15; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8; Matthew 24:30, 26:63-64).

We believe that Jesus Christ was physically resurrected from the dead in a glorified body three days after His death on the cross. One day all believers in Christ will also be physically resurrected in glorified bodies to their eternal reward in heaven with God (Philippians 1:21-23, 3:21; Luke 24:16, 36, 39; John 2:19-21, 20:26-28, 21:4; 1 Corinthians 15:42; Acts 24:15).

We believe that Heaven is the eternal dwelling place for all who believe in Jesus Christ (Hebrews 11:16; 2 Corinthians 5:1; 1 Peter 1:4; John 17:24; Matthew 5:3, 6:20; 12, 19:21, 20, 25:34)

We believe after living one life on earth, those who have rejected Christ will be judged justly by God and sent to Hell, where they will be eternally tormented together with the devil and the fallen angels (Revelation 14:9-11, 20:12-15, 21:8; Hebrews 9:27; Matthew 25:41; Mark 9:43-48).
